From the Madoff Ponzi scheme to Google Books, Judge Denny Chin defines high-stakes litigation.
In short: Denny Chin, a senior U.S. circuit judge, has presided over some of the most consequential legal battles in modern American history. Beyond his landmark sentencing of Bernard Madoff, his career spans complex copyright disputes, high-profile defamation cases, and significant rulings on corporate accountability, marking him as a pivotal judicial figure.
Born in Hong Kong in 1954 and raised in the United States, Denny Chin built a distinguished legal career before his appointment to the federal bench. After graduating from Princeton University and Fordham Law School, he worked as an Assistant United States Attorney and in private practice, specializing in labor and employment law. In 1994, President Bill Clinton nominated him to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, making him the first Asian American appointed as a district judge outside the Ninth Circuit. He was later elevated to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in 2010 by President Barack Obama.
Chin’s courtroom has frequently been the site of high-profile cultural and financial reckonings. In 2009, he presided over the case of Bernard Madoff, who orchestrated a Ponzi scheme involving up to $65 billion. Chin famously sentenced Madoff to 150 years in prison, explicitly stating that the punishment was intended to ensure Madoff remained incarcerated until his death. Years later, in 2020, Chin denied Madoff’s request for compassionate release, maintaining that his original assessment of the "extraordinary evil" of the crimes remained unchanged.
Beyond criminal law, Chin has navigated complex intellectual property and civil rights issues. He rejected Google’s plan to digitize books, ruling it violated copyright laws, and presided over cases involving the World Wrestling Federation and Al Franken. While his decisions have sometimes been overturned—such as in the 2024 Supreme Court ruling in NRA v. Vullo—his legacy is defined by a rigorous approach to the law. Outside the courtroom, Chin and his wife, Kathy Hirata Chin, are known for producing trial reenactments of historical cases, bridging the gap between legal history and public understanding.
