The universe might be a finished DVD you are watching in real-time
In short: If your life is like a movie already recorded on a disc, the past and future aren't gone or yet to come. They simply exist at different coordinates. This perspective suggests that change itself—the very flow of time we feel—might be a trick of human perception.
According to Einstein’s theory of relativity, reality may follow a 'block universe' model. In this four-dimensional spacetime structure, every event possesses specific coordinates in both space and time. Just as the physical space ten feet behind you is just as real as the space in front of you, the moment ten minutes into the past or future exists with equal validity. From this perspective, the present is not a moving spotlight but merely one location among many in a static structure.
MIT physicist Max Tegmark suggests that while we perceive a three-dimensional world where things happen, the universe could be viewed as a four-dimensional block where nothing actually changes. In this model, change is an illusion; the entire 'story' of your life is already written, much like a DVD. You simply lack the buttons to skip ahead or rewind, forcing you to experience the pre-existing data one moment at a time.
This creates a profound tension with our lived experience. Physics is notably 'time-agnostic,' meaning its equations remain valid whether time runs forward or backward. The only reason we perceive an 'arrow of time' pointing forward is likely due to the law of entropy, which dictates that the universe moves toward greater disorderliness. However, science currently lacks a fundamental explanation for why entropy must increase rather than decrease, leaving the ultimate origin of our perception of time a mystery.
Ultimately, our sense of history and destiny may be entirely neurological. We only perceive a 'past' because our brains store memories; without them, the distinction between then and now might vanish. If time does not exist as a fundamental property but only as a subjective experience, then the flow we feel is merely the way our minds process a static reality.
