The 'Enraged' who turned revolutionary rhetoric into direct action
In short: During the French Revolution, a group known as the Enragés pushed the movement toward its most radical edge. They didn't just debate policy; they demanded immediate survival for the poor, viewing the hoarding of basic goods as a treasonous act punishable by death.
The Enragés, or 'enraged ones,' were a loose collection of firebrands rather than a unified political party. While the Jacobins often grouped them together as a single entity to the left, the members—including leaders like Jacques Roux and Jean-François Varlet—often worked toward individual objectives and occasionally even called for each other's arrest. They were defined by their strident defense of the sans-culottes, the lower-class working people who felt abandoned by the National Convention's failure to curb capitalist profiteering.
Their ideology was rooted in the belief that the French Revolution had produced 'vain phantoms' of equality while the rich continued to profit at the expense of the poor. In his 1793 'Manifesto of the Enragés,' Jacques Roux argued that goods necessary for survival should be delivered at prices accessible to all. They viewed price gouging and monopolies as counter-revolutionary acts, famously asserting that while the pursuit of resources was acceptable, the act of limiting access to them was a crime deserving of capital punishment.
The Enragés were pioneers of direct action, utilizing both legal oratory and extralegal methods like riots and the plundering of merchant businesses. They were also notable for their inclusion of women; Jean-François Varlet organized working-poor women into mobile units, and revolutionary proto-feminists like Claire Lacombe held vital positions. This radical push for social and economic reform eventually forced the Montagnards to adopt some of their proposals to maintain popular support, even as the Enragés were eventually undermined by the very leaders they sought to influence.
