Our universe might be just one bubble in an infinite sea

Eternal Inflation: The BEST MULTIVERSE Theory of Reality · 14:08 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: The Big Bang wasn't necessarily the beginning of everything. If cosmic inflation is eternal, our entire observable reality could be a single pocket of stability within a vast, ever-expanding multiverse where new universes are being born constantly.

Cosmic inflation describes a period shortly after the universe's birth when space expanded exponentially fast for a fraction of a second. While this explains why our universe appears flat and homogeneous, it also introduces the possibility of 'eternal inflation.' This occurs because the decay of the scalar inflation field—the mechanism driving expansion—is subject to quantum randomness. Much like radioactive decay, where some atoms decay while others remain stable, inflation may stop in some regions while continuing in others.

Physicists Steinhardt, Linde, and Vilenkin demonstrated that if the inflation field decays slower than the rate of universal expansion, inflation can persist indefinitely. In this scenario, space is constantly being created, allowing new 'bubble universes' to form perpetually. Unlike radioactive decay, where material eventually depletes, eternal inflation produces new space continuously. This suggests that what we perceive as the start of our universe was merely the moment inflation ended in our specific local region.

Because these bubbles form from quantum fluctuations, there is no physical law requiring them to share our fundamental constants or laws of physics. These universes are likely separated by space expanding so rapidly that light-speed communication is impossible. However, researchers like Steven Hawking and Thomas Hertog have suggested that background gravitational waves might hold clues about this structure. While we cannot visit these other bubbles, high-energy physics may eventually reveal the universal laws governing the entire multiverse.

This theory shifts our perspective from a single, unique cosmos to a landscape of infinite variety. It implies that our existence is a localized event in a much larger, unimaginably vast system where every possible physical outcome might be realized elsewhere.
