Red foxes may use the Earth's magnetic field to target prey

In short: When snow hides a mouse, a red fox doesn't just rely on its ears. New research suggests these predators might be using the planet's magnetic field as a built-in targeting system, leaping in a specific direction to maximize their hunting success when visibility is low.

In the Czech Republic, researcher Jaroslav Červený led a massive study to understand how red foxes locate prey under difficult conditions. Working with a team of 23 biologists and hunters, the group tracked 84 foxes and recorded nearly 600 mousing jumps. They discovered a striking pattern: foxes showed a strong preference for leaping in a north-easterly direction, roughly 20 degrees away from magnetic north. This research involved a large-scale effort spanning over two years. The team's observations were conducted across a diverse range of locations and times.

This directional bias appears to be a vital survival mechanism. The study found that foxes were significantly more successful when jumping along this preferred axis, especially when prey was obscured by snow or high cover. When leaping north-east, the success rate reached 73%. In contrast, jumping in the opposite direction resulted in a 60% success rate, while jumps in any other direction saw success plummet to just 18%.

To ensure the direction wasn't influenced by external factors, the team checked for correlations with wind, season, time of day, or cloud cover, but found none. This leaves the Earth's magnetic field as the most plausible explanation for this fixed heading. While experts like Roswitha Wiltschko find these findings astonishing, they remain speculative. As John Philips from Virginia Tech notes, the validity of this conclusion depends on whether alternative hypotheses can be ruled out to explain the data. The researchers investigated whether environmental variables like wind direction or seasonal changes played a role. They also looked at whether cloud cover or the time of day affected the foxes' behaviour.
