In short: In 1481, Sultan Bayezid II sought a way to unify a diverse, expanding empire. Legend says his search led him to a rose garden where a mystic suggested a radical solution: a school that would educate students from all backgrounds to create a generation of wise leaders.

The institution, now known as Galatasaray High School, was founded in Istanbul in 1481. It is the second-oldest educational institution in Turkey, following Istanbul University. Its origins are steeped in local lore; the Sultan reportedly met the Bektashi dervish Gül Baba in a garden of red and yellow roses. Gül Baba argued that to serve a massive, multi-ethnic empire, the state needed to train minds from every walk of life, rather than just a select few. The Sultan granted the edict, and Gül Baba became the first headmaster.

The school has undergone massive structural shifts to mirror the geopolitical changes of the region. During the 1830s, the Tanzimat reform movement replaced the old Imperial School with a French-led Medical School. In 1868, Sultan Abdülaziz—the first Ottoman sultan to travel to Europe—established a new lycée model based on the French system. This new era was intentionally inclusive, enrolling students from all religious and ethnic communities, including a significant number of Bulgarian students between 1868 and 1878.

Today, Galatasaray remains one of Turkey's most elite and selective institutions, admitting only the top 0.03% of students nationwide. It maintains a unique dual-curriculum, teaching subjects like philosophy and science in French, while history and ethics are taught in Turkish. The Galatasaray Community, featuring the renowned Galatasaray S.K., originated from this educational establishment's heritage. football club, founded by students in a school classroom in 1905.
