The smaller shark may have outcompeted the ocean's largest predator

In short: Megalodon is the ultimate apex predator of Hollywood imagination, but in reality, it may have been pushed to extinction by its much smaller cousins. New chemical analysis of fossilized teeth suggests that great white sharks may have won a prehistoric battle for resources, proving that size isn't everything in survival.

Researchers investigating the extinction of the Otodus megalodon—the largest shark to ever exist—have identified a potential culprit: the great white shark. While the megalodon could reach lengths of 20 meters (65.6 feet) and lived between 23 and 3.6 million years ago, its smaller relative, the great white, currently reaches only about 6 meters (19.6 feet). The study, published in Nature Communications, suggests that these two species coexisted during the Pliocene Epoch and may have competed for the same food sources.

To uncover this hidden history, scientists analyzed zinc isotopes preserved in the enamel of 13 megalodon teeth and 20 modern great white teeth. Because zinc isotopes vary depending on an animal's position in the food chain, they can reveal 'trophic levels.' The results showed that early Pliocene great whites occupied a remarkably similar trophic level to the much larger megalodon. This indicates that both species were hunting high-level prey, likely large fish, creating a direct dietary overlap.

This competition may have provided a distinct advantage to the smaller great whites. Because they were smaller, they likely required less food to survive than the colossal megalodon. In a changing world, the smaller sharks may have been more efficient at securing dwindling resources. However, scientists note that while dietary competition is a compelling theory, other factors like climate change or a total collapse of prey populations during the Pliocene could also have contributed to the megalodon's disappearance 3.6 million years ago.
