How do koalas survive on a diet of toxic eucalyptus leaves?
In short: Koalas are incredibly picky eaters that will only consume eucalyptus leaves directly from the branch. On a plate, they might not even recognize their food. To survive this nutrient-poor and toxic diet, these marsupials rely on a specialized internal system and a very specific lifestyle.
The koala's survival is a feat of biological specialization. These tree-dwelling marsupials, found in coastal eastern and southern Australia, feed very selectively on specific eucalyptus trees. This diet is notoriously difficult to process; eucalyptus leaves are low in nutrients and loaded with toxic substances and tannins. To manage this, the koala possesses a massive intestinal pouch, known as a cecum, which is approximately 2 metres long. Inside this pouch, symbiotic bacteria work to degrade the complex and toxic compounds, allowing the animal to digest up to 1.3 kg of leaves every single day.
Because this diet provides so little spare energy, koalas have evolved a lifestyle centered around conservation. They spend long hours sitting or sleeping in tree forks to rest. While they appear placid, they are capable of producing loud, hollow grunts. Their physical anatomy is also highly specialized for an arboreal life; they possess strong, clawed feet with opposable digits on the innermost digit of the hind feet and the two inner digits of the front feet to aid in grasping.
The life cycle of a koala is equally specialized. After a gestation period of 34 to 36 days, a single youngster, or joey, is born. Unlike many other arboreal marsupials, the koala's pouch opens rearward. At about five months of age, the joey begins to peek its head out of the pouch. For roughly six weeks, it is weaned on 'pap'—a soupy, predigested form of eucalyptus derived from the mother's cecum—which the joey laps directly from the mother's anus. Once fully weaned, the joey clings to its mother's back until it is nearly a year old.
