Evolution is not a ladder toward progress, but a filter for fitness

In short: Many people view evolution as a linear climb toward perfection or a series of lucky accidents. In reality, it is a non-random process of survival. It doesn't care about making organisms bigger or stronger; it only cares about who survives long enough to reproduce in a specific environment.

To understand evolution, one must first separate the mechanism from the myth. A common misconception is that evolution happens to individuals or occurs by pure random chance. In truth, evolution is the inherited change in a population over time. While mutations—the raw material of genetic variety—are indeed random mistakes in DNA copying, natural selection is the opposite of random. It acts as a non-random filter where only variations providing a reproductive advantage persist.

The scale of this process is often misunderstood. Out of all possible genetic mutations, about 99.99% are either neutral or harmful; only roughly 0.01% are beneficial enough to be favored by selection. This means evolution isn't 'trying' to create a Boeing 747 out of a junkyard. Rather, if you subjected millions of junk piles to repeated cycles of destruction and then meticulously copied only the most flight-worthy pieces over millions of years, you would eventually produce a flying machine. Evolution works by preserving those small, functional successes across generations.

Furthermore, evolution is not a march toward 'higher' complexity. Some species, like the American Alligator, have remained largely unchanged for 8 million years because they face little environmental pressure to change. Humans are also not the 'most evolved' species; our planet is dominated by single-celled organisms, which collectively weigh about 10^14 kg compared to the total human weight of 10^11 kg. Evolution simply measures how well an organism fits its current niche.
