Why your phone's calculator might be lying to you
In short: Standard smartphone calculators often sacrifice precision for speed, leading to mathematical errors in large-scale calculations. This video explores how Google engineers developed a smarter alternative by rethinking the fundamental way computers handle numbers.
The iOS calculator relies on floating point arithmetic, a method favored for its memory efficiency and ability to represent vast ranges of numbers quickly. However, this approach can produce incorrect results in specific scenarios, such as calculating 10^100 + 1 - 10^100, which the system may incorrectly identify as zero.
To solve this, Google's Hans Boehm implemented a hybrid approach using recursive real arithmetic. This method aims to eliminate common errors while addressing user experience nuances, such as determining whether to display a result as a clean zero or a long string of decimals like 0.00000000.
