The periodic table is a map of quantum probability

How Quantum Mechanics Predicts All The Elements · 14:44 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: Why do elements behave the way they do? The answer lies in the invisible architecture of the atom. By solving a single equation for the simplest atom, scientists can predict the behavior of every element in the universe, revealing that chemistry is essentially a quest for energy efficiency.

The structure of the periodic table is governed by the arrangement of electrons around an atomic nucleus. While the Bohr model first suggested that electrons exist in stable orbits, quantum mechanics reveals a more complex reality. Erwin Schrödinger demonstrated that electrons are not like planets on tracks; they are matter waves forming 3D probability clouds smeared around the nucleus.

To determine these patterns, scientists use the Schrödinger equation, which is fundamentally a statement of energy conservation. It calculates the total energy of an atom as the sum of potential and kinetic energy. The equation shows that electrons naturally seek the lowest energy configurations, which occur when shells are either completely empty or entirely full. This drive for stability is the underlying engine of all chemical reactions, where substances exchange or share electrons to complete these shells.

The math relies on three quantum numbers: n, l, and m. These represent the shell layer, the orbital angular momentum, and the spatial orientation of the orbital, respectively. By plugging these values into the Schrödinger equation, we can determine the maximum capacity of each shell—starting with 2, then 8, 18, 32, 50, and 72. While the equation is solved exactly for hydrogen, it serves as a reliable approximation for all other elements. For larger, more complex atoms, the math becomes too unwieldy to solve perfectly, leading to small variations in how orbits are occupied, but the fundamental quantum framework remains our primary tool for predicting the building blocks of matter.
