How data can lie to you when it's added together

How SIMPSON'S PARADOX explains weird COVID19 statistics · 8:12 · Video: Dr. Trefor Bazett · Watch at the source

In short: Imagine a country where every single age group has a higher survival rate than its neighbor, yet the national average shows the opposite. This isn't a glitch in the math; it is Simpson's Paradox. It reveals how aggregating data can flip the truth on its head, leading to perfectly accurate numbers but completely wrong conclusions.

Simpson's Paradox, also known as the Yule-Simpson paradox, occurs when a trend appears in several different groups of data but disappears or reverses when those groups are combined. It is an ecological fallacy where the aggregate view obscures the reality of the individual components. This phenomenon matters because it demonstrates that even high-quality data can be used to support contradictory narratives depending on how it is sliced.

A striking real-world example emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic regarding Infection Fatality Rates (IFR) in Belgium. Data from June 2020 showed a startling contradiction: in every specific age bracket—from those under 25 to those over 85—men had a higher IFR than women. However, when looking at the total population of Belgium, the data flipped, showing that women actually had a higher overall IFR. This counter-intuitive result is a classic illustration of how hidden variables can distort our perception of risk.

The mechanism behind this specific paradox lies in demographic distribution. In the Belgian case, there were significantly more older women than men in the population. Because the virus is much more lethal to the elderly, the high number of older women pulled the national average for women upward, even though they fared better than men within their own age groups. This serves as a warning for researchers and policymakers: without compartmentalizing data by relevant factors like age or geography, we risk making decisions based on statistical illusions.
