Why the sun can catch you off guard in unexpected places

You might assume a sunburn requires tropical heat, but the sun can strike when you least expect it. This video explores how sunburn occurs in the shade or even in the cold, and the physical signs of skin damage to watch for.

Sunburn is essentially skin damage resulting from excessive sun exposure. While those with white skin may see obvious redness or pinkness, individuals with black or brown skin may not notice a visible change in skin colour. Symptoms can include skin that feels hot, sore, or painful, and it may eventually flake or peel a few days later. In severe cases, blisters can form.

Beyond the immediate discomfort, severe burns can lead to serious conditions like heat exhaustion or heatstroke. It is also important to note that getting sunburnt can increase your long-scale risk of skin cancer.
