Humble, Texas, transformed from a humble fruit stand into a massive oil boomtown.
In short: Named after a man who once sold fruit, this Texas city became the center of a massive oil industry by 1905. While the boom eventually receded, the town left a permanent mark on energy history as the birthplace of the company that would eventually become the global giant Exxon.
The history of Humble is inextricably linked to the discovery of oil in 1904. Following the famous Spindletop discovery in Beaumont, Texas, the region quickly evolved into a major industrial hub. By 1905, the Humble oilfield was the largest producing field in the state, eventually yielding over 138,835,590 barrels of petroleum. This rapid expansion provided the foundation for the Humble Oil & Refining Company, founded in 1911, which served as a direct predecessor to the modern Exxon corporation.
Before the oil era, the area was a modest settlement. Pleasant Smith Humble, the city's namesake, operated a fruit stand in 1883 and worked as a wood dealer by 1885. By the turn of the century, he had transitioned into law, serving as an attorney. The city's geography is unique, as downtown Humble sits directly atop a salt dome, which explains the shallow nature of the petroleum deposits that once defined its economy. When the oil boom eventually subsided, the local economy shifted toward timber, dairy, and truck farming.
Today, the city of 16,795 residents maintains a distinct identity within the Houston metropolitan area. Beyond its industrial roots, Humble has become a cultural and educational center. It hosts the only remaining private factory for the DeLorean Motor Company and provides extensive public services, including a library system that evolved from a high school book collection in 1921 to a modern 15,000-square-foot facility. The city continues to balance its historical legacy with contemporary suburban life, serving as a hub for both local education and regional outreach.
