Your immune system might be attacking your lungs for doing nothing wrong
In short: Imagine your body identifying harmless dust or mold as a deadly invader. This internal misunderstanding triggers a fierce inflammatory response that can scar your lungs. It is a rare immune disorder where your own defenses become the primary source of your respiratory distress.
Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is an immune-mediated inflammatory reaction triggered by inhaled environmental antigens. The body mistakenly identifies substances like animal proteins, mold, fungi, bacteria, or certain chemicals as harmful threats. This causes the immune system to launch an attack, leading to inflammation of the lungs (pneumonitis). While most people can breathe in these substances without issue, certain individuals develop a hypersensitivity that prevents their lungs from functioning properly. The condition is often named after its specific environmental triggers. For example, it is known as 'farmer’s lung' when caused by agricultural materials like hay or cattle, 'hot tub lung' from poorly maintained water systems, and 'bird fancier’s lung' from bird droppings or feathers. There are over 300 known specific causes, ranging from skin cells shed by furred animals to wood dust in lumber mills.
Risk factors are often tied to specific occupations, such as metal work, paper manufacturing, or handling grains and flour. Symptoms can manifest quickly—within a few hours of exposure—presenting as fever, chills, muscle aches, and a dry cough. However, repeated or long-term exposure leads to more severe, chronic issues. This includes persistent shortness of breath, weight loss, and 'clubbing' of the fingers or toes. If left untreated, the constant cycle of inflammation can lead to permanent damage, specifically pulmonary fibrosis (scarring of the air sacs) and pulmonary hypertension, which is high blood pressure between the heart and lungs. Genetics may also influence an individual's susceptibility to these reactions and the severity of resulting scarring.
