The roots of Intact Financial stretch back to 1809 with the Halifax Fire Insurance Association. Its journey through the 20th century was defined by massive international consolidation. In 1959, the Dutch insurer Nationale-Nederlanden (NN) acquired the Halifax Insurance Company, eventually merging with other entities to form ING Group. This lineage includes a complex web of acquisitions, including the Western Union Insurance Company and various portfolios from Swiss insurer Zurich and Allianz Canada. A pivotal shift occurred in 2009 when ING decided to exit the Canadian market.
The sale of its 70% stake in ING Canada raised CA$1.9 billion, leading to the birth of Intact Insurance Company as an independent entity. Since then, the company has aggressively expanded through high-value acquisitions, such as the CA$2.6 billion purchase of Axa Canada in 2011 and the CA$5.1 billion joint acquisition of RSA Insurance Group in 2021, which secured five million new customers across the UK, Ireland, and Europe.
Today, the company is pivoting toward high-tech resilience. Beyond traditional insurance, Intact has invested CA$500 million in technology and AI, operating labs in Montreal, Toronto, and Hong Kong to deploy approximately 93 machine learning models by 2024. It also addresses physical risks directly, investing CA$25 million between 2010 and 2024 into roughly 100 climate adaptation projects to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events on its massive portfolio.
