The hidden geometry of shapes is built from triangles
In short: Every polygon, from a simple square to a complex decagon, shares a secret architectural DNA. By breaking these shapes down into triangles, we can unlock the mathematical laws governing their interior angles. It is a fundamental principle of geometry that turns complex shapes into simple, predictable arithmetic.
The foundation of interior angle geometry rests on a single constant: the triangle. In Euclidean geometry, the sum of the three interior angles of any triangle is always 180 degrees. This serves as the building block for understanding all other polygons. By drawing diagonals from a single vertex, any polygon can be partitioned into a specific number of triangles, allowing us to calculate the total sum of its interior angles by multiplication.
The relationship between a polygon's sides and its internal triangles is consistent: there are always two fewer triangles than there are sides. For example, a quadrilateral (4 sides) can be split into 2 triangles, resulting in a total of 360 degrees (180 x 2). A pentagon (5 sides) splits into 3 triangles, totaling 540 degrees. Following this logic, an octagon (8 sides) contains 6 triangles, yielding a total of 1080 degrees.
While the sum of interior angles applies to both regular and irregular polygons, calculating the size of a single interior angle requires regularity. A regular polygon is defined by having all sides and all angles equal. To find the measure of one angle in a regular shape, you take the total sum of the interior angles and divide it by the number of sides. For instance, in a regular pentagon, the 540-degree total is divided by 5 to find that each angle is 108 degrees. In a regular heptagon, the calculation results in approximately 128.6 degrees per angle.
