Can a single geometric shape contain every force in the universe?

Is E8 Lattice the True Nature of Reality? Or Theory of Everything? · 9:15 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: The E8 lattice is often cited as one of the most beautiful structures in mathematics. To some physicists, it isn't just an abstract shape; it is a potential blueprint for reality, encoding every known particle and fundamental force into a single, elegant geometric framework.

In 2007, theoretical physicist Antony Garrett Lisi proposed that the E8 Lie group—a complex mathematical object with 248 symmetries—could serve as a "theory of everything." The core of his argument lies in the fact that the Standard Model describes four fundamental forces (strong, weak, electromagnetism, and gravity) and 12 fundamental particles. When you account for antiparticles and eight specific quantum numbers assigned to each particle, you arrive at 224 distinct elementary particles.

Lisi discovered a mathematical relationship where these 224 particles correspond to points within the E8 model. However, because the lattice contains 248 points, his theory requires the existence of 24 additional theoretical particles that have not yet been observed. While Lisi notes this is a "long shot," the discovery of even one of these particles would be considered a major breakthrough for the theory's validity.

The model is compelling because it mirrors real-world physics; the way lines radiate between points in the E8 lattice mimics how particles interact in reality, such as photons interacting with leptons to create electrons. Most significantly, Lisi’s framework includes a particle behaving like a graviton, potentially unifying matter and gravity in one system.

The theory faces significant scrutiny. In 2010, mathematician Skip Garibaldi published a paper mathematically disproving parts of Lisi's work, and critics argue that combining bosons (force carriers) with matter particles without the rigorous framework found in String Theory is arbitrary. Nevertheless, proponents argue E8 offers a potentially testable alternative to String Theory, as it describes a universe with only four dimensions rather than 10 or 11.
