The missing billion years of Earth's history may be tectonic
In short: In the geological record, there are places where the history of our planet simply vanishes, jumping forward by over a billion years. This massive gap, known as the Great Unconformity, has long baffled scientists. New research suggests that the culprit wasn't ice, but the violent birth of supercontinents.
The Great Unconformity is a widespread geological phenomenon where sedimentary rocks from the Cambrian Period sit directly on top of much older igneous and metamorphic rocks, known as crystalline basement. This gap represents a 'missing chapter' where more than a billion years of history appear to have been erased through a combination of intense erosion and long periods of zero sediment deposition.
For years, two primary theories competed to explain this massive erasure. One suggested that during the Cryogenian Period, roughly 700 million years ago, 'Snowball Earth' glaciation events were powerful enough to erode kilometers of continental crust. However, researchers studying the North China Craton found no evidence of a specific, singular pulse of erosion corresponding to those ice ages, leading them to favor a tectonic explanation.
The new findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, point to the formation and breakup of early supercontinents. By analyzing minerals like zircon, monazite, and mica in the North China Craton, the team reconstructed the cooling and rising of basement rocks. In the craton's interior, these rocks cooled rapidly between 2.1 and 1.6 billion years ago, indicating about 12 kilometers of uplift and erosion. This was followed by a more gradual cooling period that added another 9 to 13 kilometers of erosion by approximately 520 million years ago.
This research matters because it shifts our understanding of how Earth's surface is reshaped. Rather than a single catastrophic weather event, the Great Unconformity is likely the result of sustained, large-scale tectonic forces that moved entire continents, stripping away the record of a billion years of life and geology in the process.
