In short: In 1906, Frederick Herbert Sill founded a school that broke the mold of elite education. Instead of catering only to the wealthy, he created a system where the rich covered the costs for those of moderate means, establishing a forerunner to modern financial aid.

Founded in 1906 by Anglo-Catholic Episcopal priest Frederick Herbert Sill, Kent School was designed to spread English influence in the United States. However, Sill faced a practical hurdle: the Gilded Age elite were largely unwilling to fund another prep school. To solve this, he embraced an egalitarian culture, aiming to serve families of moderate means who could not afford the high fees of established Episcopal boarding schools.

Sill introduced a revolutionary 'sliding-scale tuition model.' In 1927, while neighboring St. Grottlesex schools charged a flat fee between $1,200 and $1,400, Kent's average tuition was $800. Under Sill's system, parents contributed anything from $0 to $1,500 based on their ability to pay. To maintain this balance, all students—regardless of wealth—were required to perform manual labor on the school farm or complete chores to help pay their way.

The school's commitment to diversity and inclusion evolved over the decades. Kent welcomed its initial Asian and African-American pupils during 1954, then tried providing a 1955 scholarship for a black South African individual; this triggered a global controversy after the apartheid regime blocked the person's passport. While Kent became co-ed in 1960, girls initially attended a separate campus five miles away until 1992. Today, the school serves 520 students from 31 countries, with 36% of the student body receiving financial aid.

This legacy of 'Directness of Purpose' continues to define the institution's identity. The school currently maintains a 5:1 student-to-faculty ratio and serves a population that is 93% boarding. By prioritizing character and self-reliance over mere status, Kent remains an example of how intentional structural design can create a more inclusive educational environment.
