COVID-19 may leave a lasting footprint on children's immune systems
In short: While rare, children who contract COVID-19 may face a serious complication resembling Kawasaki disease. This video explores the link between the virus and inflammatory responses, helping parents understand why certain symptoms require urgent medical attention.
Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute, self-limiting vasculitis in children that affects medium-caliber vessels. While its exact cause is unknown, it is believed to involve genetics, infectious triggers, and immune dysregulation. Recent evidence suggests that COVID-19 may cause post-infection immune dysregulation in children, potentially occurring several weeks after the initial infection.
A study of 161 children in China found that those who had COVID-19 before the onset of KD had a significantly higher rate of IVIG resistance (33.8% vs 15.5% in non-infected children). The infected group also showed higher levels of certain inflammatory markers, such as TNF-α and IFN-γ, and lower CD4 levels. Because symptoms of KD can overlap with COVID-19 and other inflammatory syndromes, early diagnosis is critical to prevent coronary artery aneurysms, which can occur in up to 25% of cases if treatment is delayed.
