Why top predators face the highest risk of chemical poisoning

KS3 Biology - Food Chains · 4:59 · Video: Cognito · Watch at the source

In short: Understanding food chains is about more than just who eats whom; it is a study of energy loss and toxic accumulation. This video explains how substances move through ecosystems, impacting every level of life.

Food chains map the feeding relationships between organisms and illustrate how energy flows through an ecosystem. However, this transfer is inefficient. Significant amounts of energy are lost at each trophic level due to biological processes like respiration and movement, as well as being released as heat.

A critical consequence of these pathways is bioaccumulation. When poisonous substances enter a food chain, they can build up within organisms at every stage. Because of this process, top carnivores often suffer the most severe effects from toxins, as they sit at the end of these cumulative pathways.
