The invisible architecture of life is built from a single element.

KS3 Chemistry - The Carbon Cycle · 5:54 · Video: Cognito · Watch at the source

In short: Carbon is the fundamental building block of life on Earth. This video explains how carbon moves through our planet, from the atmosphere into our bodies and back again.

The carbon cycle describes the continuous movement of carbon between the atmosphere, living organisms, and the Earth's crust. Plants act as the primary gateway, using photosynthesis to pull carbon dioxide from the air to create glucose. This glucose serves as the foundation for essential nutrients like carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

Carbon travels through ecosystems as organisms consume one another in food chains. It is eventually returned to the atmosphere through respiration by plants and animals, the decomposition of waste by microorganisms, and the combustion of fossil fuels that have stored carbon for millions of years.
