In short: Most people judge a product's impact by its waste, but the real story begins long before disposal. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) reveals the invisible trail of carbon, toxins, and ecological damage a product leaves behind from the moment of its birth to its final fate.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a systematic method used to evaluate the environmental footprint of a product throughout its entire existence. Rather than looking at a single moment of use, it tracks every stage a product goes through before it is potentially recycled. This holistic view allows scientists to identify which specific phases—such as raw material extraction, manufacturing, transport, or usage—contribute most significantly to ecological degradation.

To quantify these impacts, researchers use specific indicators. For example, Climate Change is measured by greenhouse gas emissions, often converted into kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (kg CO2 eq) to standardize the global warming potential. Other critical metrics include Ozone Depletion, which tracks substances like Freon-11 that damage the stratospheric layer protecting us from UV-B radiation, and Acidification, which measures the deposition of emissions (like sulfur from fuel combustion) into water and soil, often leading to fish mortality and forest decline.

LCA also accounts for human health and complex ecological shifts. This includes Human Toxicity, measured via the USEtox model in Comparative Toxic Units for humans (CTUh), and Particulate Matter (PM) emissions, where smaller particles are noted as more dangerous due to their ability to penetrate deep into the lungs. Furthermore, the assessment monitors Eutrophication—the nutrient overload from nitrogen or phosphorus that triggers harmful algal growth—and Photochemical Ozone formation, which contributes to 'summer smog' and respiratory issues in urban environments.
