Biodiversity is not just nature; it is a pillar of national security

In short: We often view biodiversity as a scenic luxury, but it is actually the invisible infrastructure of human survival. From the antibiotics in our medicine cabinets to the stability of global food chains, the collapse of diverse ecosystems creates cascading risks that threaten geopolitical stability and public health.

Biodiversity encompasses the intricate variety of genes, species, and ecosystems across the planet. It is not a static background but a dynamic system providing essential 'ecosystem services.' These include the regulation of air and soil quality, the purification of freshwater—provided by healthy ecosystems which account for 75% of global freshwater resources—and the stabilization of our climate. For instance, forests alone store 80% of terrestrial biodiversity while absorbing roughly 2.6 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.

The mechanisms of this loss are multifaceted, driven by habitat destruction, invasive species, pollution, and over-harvesting. Invasive alien species are particularly destructive, contributing to an estimated 60% of all species extinctions and causing approximately US$ 423 billion in global economic damage annually. This degradation isn't just an environmental tragedy; it is a direct threat to human health.

Over 50% of modern medicines originate from natural sources, such as painkillers derived from plants or antibiotics from fungi. When these biological libraries vanish, we lose the potential for future pharmacological discoveries. Furthermore, biodiversity loss creates systemic vulnerabilities in global supply chains and food security. More than 75% of global food crops depend on pollinators, which contribute between US$ 235 billion and US$ 577 billion to annual agricultural output. As ecosystems collapse, they can disrupt livelihoods, influence migration patterns, and even trigger political conflict. Recognizing these links is why strategic assessments now frame ecosystem health as a matter of national security, highlighting the need for green finance and global partnerships to safeguard the biological foundations of prosperity.
