Why the Mandaic alphabet uses 24 letters to mirror the hours of a day
In short: The Mandaic alphabet is more than a writing system; it is a sacred tool believed to embody powers of life and light. While it shares the 22-letter foundation of Semitic scripts, it intentionally expands to 24 characters to align with the hours of the day, ensuring its magical completeness.
Developed by the Mandaean faith in Lower Mesopotamia, the Mandaic script emerged between the second and seventh century CE. Its precise origins remain debated, with scholars suggesting it evolved from either a cursive form of the Aramaic alphabet or Inscriptional Parthian. Despite its ancient roots, the script has remained remarkably stable, changing very little over centuries of liturgical use.
Unlike most Semitic writing systems, Mandaic is notable for writing out vowels in full. It follows a right-to-left horizontal flow and is known as Abagada, named after its first letters rather than the traditional aleph-beth sequence. The system contains 22 standard letters, but to reach the symbolic count of 24, it includes the digraph adu and repeats the first letter, a, at the end. This numerical structure is essential, as Mandaeans consider the alphabet sacred; without this repetition, the script would be viewed as incomplete for ritual purposes.
Modern technology has played a crucial role in preserving this tradition. In recent decades, Mandaean scholar Majid Fandi Al-Mubaraki has digitized numerous texts using typeset scripts, and the Mandaic alphabet was officially integrated into the Unicode Standard in October 2010. The script also features specialized marks, such as a dot for gemination—which native writers describe as a 'hard' pronunciation—and an affrication mark used to adapt the alphabet for Persian loanwords. Today, the script continues to serve both Classical Mandaic and its modern descendant, Neo-Mandaic.
