Why your personal hygiene habits might not be enough alone

Masks? Handwashing? Sanitizer? — How to Protect Yourself from Coronaviruses · 6:25 · Video: SciShow · Watch at the source

In short: Protecting yourself from coronaviruses requires more than just a single habit. While handwashing and masks are staples of public health, their effectiveness depends on specific conditions like ventilation and proximity. Understanding how these methods interact is key to moving beyond basic precautions toward meaningful protection.

COVID-19 spreads primarily through close contact when an infected person breathes, speaks, coughs, or sneezes, releasing small droplets containing the virus. These droplets can be inhaled directly or land on surfaces, where they can be transferred to your eyes, nose, or mouth by your hands. Because of this transmission route, the risk is significantly higher in indoor, crowded, and poorly ventilated spaces where people spend long periods together.

To combat this, health organizations like the WHO and NHS recommend a multi-layered approach. Hand hygiene—using soap and water or alcohol-based sanitizers—is essential to break the chain of surface-to-face transmission. Yet, masks fulfil a distinct main role: they might reduce the chance of spreading germs by limiting how many pathogens are emitted while speaking or inhaling. While the evidence for medical masks shows a small to moderate protective effect, their success relies heavily on them being properly fitted to cover the nose, mouth, and chin.

Crucially, some common behaviors may not be as effective as people assume. For instance, some actions may not significantly help and could potentially divert supplies from those at higher risk. Effective protection requires combining masks with physical distancing—staying at least 1 to 2 metres away from others—and improving environment safety by opening windows or meeting outdoors. The goal is to reduce the '3Cs': closed, crowded, and close-contact settings, which are the primary drivers of outbreaks in places like restaurants, fitness classes, and offices.
