The £10 carmaker that collapsed under a billion-pound debt
In short: In 2000, the Phoenix Consortium bought the remains of Britain's last domestic mass-production carmaker for a nominal £10. Despite selling over 170,000 cars in its first year, the company spiraled into a financial abyss, eventually leaving behind debts exceeding £1.4 billion.
MG Rover Group was formed in 2000 after BMW sold off the volume car production assets of the original Rover Group due to constant losses and declining market share. The deal saw the Phoenix Consortium, led by former Rover CEO John Towers, acquire the business for just £10. While sales peaked at over 170,000 units in 2001, the company struggled with profitability; it reported losses of roughly £400 million in late 2000 and only managed to reduce those losses to about £80 million by 2004.
The collapse was accelerated by a failed high-stakes alliance with China's SAIC Motor. A proposed joint venture aimed to produce up to one million cars annually, with SAIC seeking a 70% stake in exchange for a £1 billion investment. However, the deal faced significant hurdles, including scrutiny from China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), which questioned if SAIC could succeed where BMW had failed. The partnership ultimately collapsed after the British government withdrew a proposed £120 million loan to keep the deal viable.
By April 2005, MG Rover entered administration with debts surpassing £1.4 billion. Although various parties—including Sir Richard Branson and several Russian businessmen—expressed interest in reviving the marque, the company's assets were eventually sold to Nanjing Automobile Group for approximately £53 million. The collapse had a devastating ripple effect on the UK economy, resulting in more than 6,000 direct job losses at the Longbridge plant and an estimated 25,000 additional jobs lost across the wider supply chain.
