From radio DJ to Shadow Secretary: the political trajectory of Mims Davies
In short: Before entering the halls of Westminster, Mims Davies spent over a decade in Wales working as a radio presenter, earning the moniker DJ Lovespoon. Since her initial election in 2015, she has navigated various ministerial roles and parliamentary committees, eventually becoming a key figure in the Conservative shadow cabinet.
Born in 1975, Mims Davies followed a path from local radio broadcasting to national politics. Her early career included roles at Morriston Hospital Radio and the Wave Station, followed by a stint at BBC Wales. This period in Wales, where she lived for over ten years, became a defining part of her identity, leading to her nickname. Before her parliamentary career, she also worked in road safety communications for the Automobile Association and the police.
Davies entered Parliament in 2015 as the representative for Eastleigh. Her legislative career has been marked by a series of ministerial appointments across multiple government departments. She served as an Assistant Government Whip and held positions in the Wales Office, where she contributed to the North Wales Growth Deal and the removal of tolls from the Severn Bridge. Later, she held roles at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, and the Department for Work and Pensions, where she served as Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work until July 2024.
Her tenure has not been without friction. In 2018, she resigned from a committee led by Speaker John Bercow, citing concerns over his handling of bullying and harassment allegations. She also resigned from her ministerial post in 2022 during the leadership crisis surrounding Boris Johnson. Following the 2024 general election, she transitioned into her current role within the shadow cabinet. Her work has often focused on issues ranging from sports ethics and animal welfare to parliamentary standards and regional development, reflecting a career shaped by her diverse professional background and her experience as a carer for her parents.
