Moving beyond description to understand the mechanics of why things happen
In short: This video demonstrates how to move from simply describing a phenomenon to building a causal account. It teaches students how to construct models that reveal the underlying mechanisms of the natural world.
A causal account is defined as a comprehensive explanation that outlines every cause and mechanism within a specific phenomenon. To build one, learners must identify components—the parts of a larger whole—and describe the mechanisms, which are the specific processes by which an effect is produced.
Derived from the NRC's 'A Framework for K-12 Science Education', this teaching focuses on constructing models. These serve as basic system depictions used to identify component links and forecast upcoming occurrences.
