The hidden medicinal treasure buried in New York City's park soil

New York City's Microbiome · 5:17 · Video: SciShow · Watch at the source

In short: While many fear the pathogens lurking in urban subway systems, the real secret of New York City lies beneath the surface. The soil in the city's parks may actually hold a massive, untapped reservoir of biological blueprints for the next generation of life-saving medicines.

There is a common misconception that dense urban environments, particularly subway systems, are primarily breeding grounds for dangerous pathogens. However, scientific evidence does not support the idea that these transit hubs are filled with nasty, infectious agents waiting to strike unsuspecting commuters. Instead, the biological interest in urban centers is shifting toward the soil found in city parks.

Recent metagenome sequencing of New York City park soils has revealed a surprising level of biosynthetic diversity. By analyzing environmental DNA (eDNA) for specific genes, researchers found that these urban microbiomes contain gene clusters capable of producing many of the same families of clinically important molecules found in much more remote, biodiverse ecosystems. This includes the genetic blueprints for antibiotics, antifungals, and anticancer agents that are already used in modern medicine.

Traditionally, the hunt for new bacterial natural products (NPs) has involved a global search for remote, pristine environments to culture new bacteria. This process usually requires isolating and growing bacteria in pure culture to see what molecules they produce. However, the NYC study suggests that deeper exploration of local, urban microbiomes could be just as productive as looking abroad. We have seen this pattern before; for instance, macrolactins—antiviral compounds once thought to be unique to marine microorganisms—were later discovered to be produced by common bacteria found near plant roots. The New York soil may simply be a well-known library we have yet to properly read.
