The skies are growing silent: North America has lost nearly 3 billion birds
In short: It is easy to imagine a world without birds, but recent data reveals a staggering reality. Since 1970, the continental population of breeding birds has plummeted by 29 percent, signaling a potential ecological collapse that extends far beyond the loss of our backyard companions.
A massive study published in the journal Science, led by Ken Rosenberg of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, reveals that North America has lost more than 2.9 billion breeding adult birds since 1970. This decline represents a 29 percent drop in the continent's avian population. While some groups like waterfowl and raptors have seen recoveries, the overall trend is a sharp downward trajectory across nearly all habitats.
The loss is not limited to rare, threatened species. In fact, the most significant declines are occurring among 'habitat generalists'—common birds we see every day. Just 12 families of birds, such as finches, larks, blackbirds, warblers and sparrows, account for over 90 per cent of the overall decline. Specific examples include the dark-eyed junco, which has declined by 160 million, and the red-winged blackbird, down by 92 million.
Researchers believe habitat loss and changing agricultural practices are primary drivers. The intensification of agriculture, the conversion of native prairies to cropland, and increased pesticide use have decimated populations. Grassland birds have been hit particularly hard; 31 species have lost 700 million individuals, a 53 percent decline. Forest-dwelling birds have also seen a loss of 1 billion individuals.
Because birds act as 'indicator species,' their decline serves as a warning for the broader environment. Scientists note that the loss of birds impacts vital ecosystem services like pollination, seed dispersal, and pest control. The researchers suggest that the inability of human-altered landscapes to support even common bird species is a strong signal of a coming environmental collapse.
