The universe is a paradox that should not scientifically exist
In short: According to the Standard Model of particle physics, the Big Bang should have produced equal amounts of matter and antimatter. If they had annihilated each other completely, the cosmos would be a featureless void of light, devoid of stars, planets, or life.
The fundamental issue is known as the matter-antimatter imbalance. In the early universe, matter and antimatter particles were thought to have been created in equal quantities. However, antimatter is essentially a mirror version of matter, consisting of partner particles that are identical in every way except for having an opposite charge. When these two types of particles collide, they undergo annihilation, destroying one another and converting their mass into light.
If the universe had followed the predictions of the Standard Model perfectly, this mass would have been entirely wiped out, leaving behind an empty cosmos. Instead, we observe a universe filled with galaxies, stars, and planets. This suggests that a tiny amount of matter survived the great annihilation, providing the building blocks for everything we see today. This mismatch remains one of the most significant outstanding mysteries in modern physics.
To solve this, physicists are investigating various hypotheses to explain why matter gained the upper hand. Some theories suggest the existence of new particles that decay in ways that favor matter production or interact differently with antimatter. One specific area of research involves searching for the electric dipole moment in electrons—a minute displacement between an electron's center of mass and its center of charge. While the Standard Model predicts a value too small for current detection, many proposed extensions to the model predict much larger values that scientists hope to find through high-precision measurements.
