Is the feeling of leaving your body a spiritual truth or biology?

In short: About one-third of people who have been near death report out-of-body experiences, often involving peaceful detachment and bright lights. While many see this as proof of an afterlife, neuroscientists suggest these sensations might be the result of specific brain disturbances and chemical releases during physical trauma.

Neuroscientific research suggests that 'disembodied' feelings may stem from disturbances in the temporo-parietal cortex. This specific region of the brain is responsible for our sense of self and our perception of our own bodies. Experiments have shown that applying electromagnetic stimulation to this area can actually induce out-of-body experiences, suggesting a physical mechanism for what feels like a mystical event.

The profound peacefulness reported by many may be linked to the body's internal chemistry. When facing intense pain or dying, the human brain releases endorphins—the same 'feel good' chemicals that produce a 'runner’s high.' Additionally, some researchers hypothesize that the pineal gland produces DMT, a powerful psychedelic molecule often called the 'spirit' molecule, during near-death states. Studies on DMT injections have shown that more than half of subjects experienced religious visions and interactions with non-human beings in a disembodied state.

Other theories focus on survival mechanisms. Ischemia, or a lack of oxygen to the brain, can cause depersonalization, where the mind feels separate from the body as a way to cope with extreme stress or physical pain. Furthermore, astrophysicist Carl Sagan proposed that the sensation of moving through a tunnel toward a bright light might be a 'remembrance of birth syndrome,' where death triggers latent memories of the birthing process.

While these biological explanations are compelling, they do not negate personal testimony. Many individuals, such as François d’Adesky who experienced an NDE at age 13, describe vivid interactions with deceased loved ones and spiritual beings that they believe have profound meaning for their lives.
