The secret yellow fluid flowing through your veins

In short: If you look at your veins, they might appear blue, but the liquid inside is actually yellow. While red blood cells provide the characteristic color of our circulation, the primary fluid—plasma—is a distinct substance with its own unique properties and biological role.

Blood is often perceived as a single uniform liquid, but it is actually a suspension. The vibrant red color we see in a wound is caused by millions of red blood cells. However, the actual fluid that these cells float in is plasma, which is described as being yellow-ish or straw-colored. This distinction is important for understanding how nutrients and waste are transported throughout the body. The term 'plasma' also appears in physics as a completely different state of matter. In that context, plasma is an electrically conducting medium where atoms in a gas have become ionized. This means they have been stripped of electrons, creating roughly equal numbers of positively and negatively charged particles.

Because of these charges, plasma is governed by electric and magnetic forces, allowing it to act collectively like a fluid even when its individual particles rarely collide. While biological plasma is a liquid medium for cells, physical plasma is the most common state of matter in the universe. It makes up the majority of visible matter, appearing predominantly in the Sun, stars, and interstellar space. On Earth, we see it in lightning, auroras, and the ionosphere. In the lab, scientists create it by heating gases to extreme temperatures until vigorous collisions rip electrons free from their atoms, mimicking the high-energy processes that occur inside stars.

The two types of plasma share a name but differ vastly in scale and mechanism. Biological plasma is a vital life-support fluid, while physical plasma is a high-energy state of matter defined by ionization and electromagnetic behavior.
