Some infinities are fundamentally larger than others

Power Sets and the Cardinality of the Continuum · 14:43 · Video: Dr. Trefor Bazett · Watch at the source

In short: In mathematics, not all infinities are created equal. While the set of counting numbers never ends, it is still 'smaller' than the set of real numbers. This distinction reveals a hierarchy of the infinite, where the power set of any collection always creates a strictly larger magnitude of existence.

The study of transfinite numbers allows mathematicians to compare the sizes of infinite collections. While we often think of infinity as a single destination, it actually possesses different 'cardinalities.' For instance, the set of integers and the set of rational numbers are both considered countably infinite. This means they can be paired off one-to-one with the natural numbers, leaving no elements leftover. This specific size is symbolized by the Hebrew letter aleph with a subscript zero, known as aleph-null (ℵ₀).

The real numbers, however, represent a different level of infinity known as the continuum. Unlike the integers, the real numbers cannot be paired off with the natural numbers; they are 'uncountable' or nondenumerable. This means they represent a larger set. One way to visualize this jump in scale is through the power set—the set of all possible subsets of a given set. Mathematics proves that the power set of any set always has a higher cardinality than the original set, creating an infinite succession of ever-larger infinities.

This leads to one of the most famous problems in set theory: the continuum hypothesis. It asks whether there is any cardinality strictly between aleph-null (the size of the natural numbers) and the cardinality of the continuum. The hypothesis asserts that the continuum is the very next cardinal number, aleph-one (ℵ₁), meaning no set exists with a size in between. While the power set of natural numbers can be mapped surjectively to the interval [0,1] using binary numbers, the leap from countable to uncountable remains a foundational pillar of modern logic.
