Your body translates a genetic script into physical reality

In short: Every protein in your body follows a precise blueprint stored in the nucleus. But since DNA is locked away, your cells use a sophisticated relay system to turn chemical codes into the building blocks of life. It is a two-stage manufacturing process involving transcription and translation.

The journey begins in the cell nucleus, where DNA acts as the master blueprint. Because DNA is stationary and cannot leave the nucleus, the cell must create a portable copy. An enzyme called RNA polymerase unzips the double helix of a specific gene, allowing complementary nucleotides to bind and form a single strand of messenger RNA (mRNA). This first stage is known as transcription.

Once the mRNA is synthesized, it travels out of the nucleus into the cytoplasm to find a ribosome—the cell's protein factory. Here, the process shifts from copying to building, a phase called translation. The ribosome reads the mRNA sequence in groups of three bases known as codons. Each codon corresponds to one specific amino acid out of the 20 types that make up our body's proteins.

To bridge the gap between information and matter, transfer RNA (tRNA) molecules act as couriers. They carry specific amino acids to the ribosome, where they base-pair with the mRNA codons. As these tRNAs match up in the correct order, they link amino acids into a growing polypeptide chain. This chain eventually folds into a functional protein.

While our bodies can manufacture many non-essential amino acids—and even over 250 different molecules that do not form proteins at all, such as sugars—we rely on diet for nine specific 'essential' amino acids. Without these dietary inputs, the body cannot complete the synthesis required to maintain life.
