Why the two pillars of modern physics refuse to coexist

Quantum Gravity Explained in 9 Slides · 12:07 · Video: Domain of Science · Watch at the source

In short: Modern physics is currently divided by a fundamental incompatibility. This video explores why our most successful theories—quantum mechanics and general relativity—break down when combined, and where scientists are looking for the missing link.

The search for a grand unifying theory of quantum gravity has persisted for decades because current models cannot be reconciled. General relativity governs the macro scale of the universe, while quantum mechanics dictates the micro scale; however, they fail to function together as a single framework.

Because it is nearly impossible to conduct experiments where these two scales meet, physicists focus on natural phenomena that bridge the gap: black holes and the Big Bang. By studying these events and the cosmic microwave background, researchers hope to find clues toward a unified theory.
