Why your consciousness might be biologically incapable of experiencing its own death
In short: If the Many Worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics is correct, you could theoretically win a 50/50 life-or-death gamble every single time. This concept, known as quantum immortality, suggests that while other versions of you perish in alternate branches, your conscious experience will always persist in the reality where you survive.
The foundation for this idea lies in Hugh Everett’s 1957 'Many Worlds' interpretation. Unlike standard quantum mechanics, which suggests a wave function collapses into a single outcome, Everett proposed that the universal wave function never collapses. Instead, every time a quantum event occurs—such as an electron spin being measured—the universe splits. This creates a near-infinite number of parallel worlds where every possible outcome with a non-zero probability becomes its own distinct reality.
Physicists like Bryce DeWitt and David Deutsch argue that these splits are constant and astronomical in scale. Every interaction between molecules, such as your feet touching the floor, could trigger millions of splitting events. In this framework, 'you' are not a single entity but a sum total of all splittings. As Columbia University Professor Brian Greene notes, each copy believes it is the real you because each one possesses a continuous stream of consciousness from the previous branch.
This leads to the 'quantum suicide' thought experiment proposed by Max Tegmark in the late 1990s. If a person were faced with a 50/50 chance of death based on a quantum splitter, they would technically die in half of the resulting universes. However, from the perspective of the observer inside the box, they would only ever experience the branch where the gun fails to fire. Because consciousness cannot exist in a reality where it has ceased, you would always 'wake up' as the winner, effectively becoming immortal across the multiverse.
