How a 19th-century sugar magnate's estate became a modern hub for genetic genealogy research.
In short: Ramapo College sits on land once owned by a sugar tycoon, but its modern identity is defined by rapid expansion and specialized science. From its origins as a state-authorized project in 1968 to its current role in investigative genetic genealogy, the campus blends historical architecture with high-tech academic innovation.
Established in 1968 by the New Jersey Department of Higher Education, Ramapo College was designed to serve a diverse student body ranging from economically deprived urban and rural areas to middle-class families. The institution was built on the former Birch Estate in Mahwah, a site chosen for its proximity to major highways and its mountainous surroundings. The campus architecture, originally planned as an L-shaped, glass-walled facility, was specifically engineered to allow for the rapid addition of new wings, facilitating the college's quick physical growth.
The site's history is deeply rooted in the late 19th century, when wealthy families developed the Ramapo Valley for large estates. Theodore Havemeyer, a founder of the American Sugar Company, acquired over 1,000 acres in the 1870s. Today, the college preserves this legacy by utilizing the former Havemeyer mansion as the president's house and the former Birch Mansion as the administration building. This juxtaposition of historical estate structures and modern academic facilities has contributed to the campus being recognized for its aesthetic appeal.
Beyond its physical evolution, the college has carved out a niche in specialized scientific fields. In December 2022, it opened the Investigative Genetic Genealogy Center, which assists law enforcement in identifying human remains and reviewing potential wrongful convictions. This initiative complements the college's broader academic offerings, which include accredited programs in chemistry and nursing, as well as various master's degrees in data science and applied mathematics. By integrating these technical programs with its liberal arts foundation, the institution continues to adapt its original 1968 mission to meet contemporary societal needs.
