New Zealand has shifted from a predominantly Christian nation to a largely secular society.
In short: Once a bastion of British-style Christianity, New Zealand has undergone a profound demographic transformation. Today, over half of its population identifies as having no religion. While historical denominational clusters remain visible in regional geography, the rise of immigration and secularism has redefined the nation's spiritual landscape in recent decades.
New Zealand’s religious history began with indigenous Māori polytheism, followed by a rapid transition to Christianity after European arrival. By the 1840s, Māori church attendance was likely higher than in the United Kingdom. Early colonial settlement patterns, heavily influenced by the British Isles, created distinct regional religious identities that persist today. For instance, Scottish influence established Presbyterianism as a dominant force in Otago and Southland, while Anglicanism took root in the North Island and Canterbury.
The 20th century saw Christianity as the overwhelming norm, but the mid-1960s marked the beginning of a steady decline in affiliation. By the 2023 census, 51.6% of New Zealanders reported having no religion, while those identifying as Christian fell to 32.3%. This shift toward a post-Christian society is compounded by the fact that even among those who claim a faith, regular church attendance remains relatively low compared to other Western nations.
Simultaneously, immigration has diversified the religious fabric. Since the 1990s, policy changes have spurred growth in Hinduism, Islam, and Sikhism, with the latter being the fastest-growing faith. These groups are largely composed of immigrants, particularly in Auckland. Despite this growth, the secular trend dominates; even the 2001 census saw an informal campaign result in over 53,000 people listing 'Jedi' as their religion, a move Statistics New Zealand ultimately declined to count as a valid religious affiliation.
