A decade of data confirms the Higgs boson behaves as predicted
In short: Researchers using data from the ATLAS experiment at CERN have created a detailed map of how the Higgs boson interacts with various elementary particles. By analyzing more than 30 times the amount of data collected since its initial discovery in 2012, the team scrutinized how this unique particle relates to the fundamental forces of the universe.
The study examined interactions between the Higgs boson and gluons, photons, W and Z bosons, as well as third-generation matter particles like quarks and leptons. The results show that these interactions align remarkably well with the Standard Model of particle physics.
This research provides a more precise look at the Higgs field than previous studies allowed. However, because it relies on interpreting data from existing collisions rather than creating new types of interactions, it remains constrained by the current limitations of the Large Hadron Collider's reach.
Why it matters: A decade of high-precision data confirms that our fundamental understanding of how particles gain mass is largely correct.
