A new statistical method for measuring how treatment effects change over time
In short: Researchers developed a way to measure how the impact of a treatment evolves across different time periods while accounting for many changing factors. By using a technique called double machine learning, they can estimate these dynamic effects even when the data involves complex, high-dimensional variables that change over time.
The study uses specific mathematical functions to ensure that the results remain reliable even if the underlying models are slightly inaccurate. This approach allows for the analysis of specific subgroups, such as people who received a treatment at a certain starting point. The researchers validated their method through a simulation study and a real-world analysis of the Job Corps study, though the findings rely on the assumption that all relevant factors are observed in the data.
Why it matters: This method helps scientists more accurately track how interventions work over time in complex, real-world scenarios.
