Magnetic charges significantly alter the appearance and thermal properties of black holes
In short: Researchers modeling non-rotating black holes using nonlinear electrodynamics found that magnetic charges profoundly impact their observable features. By examining how these charges influence light and matter, the study demonstrated that even small amounts of charge can noticeably change a black hole's shadow radius and the way it emits gravitational waves.
The study used mathematical modeling, ray-tracing simulations, and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to examine properties like heat capacity, deflection angles, and quasinormal modes. The researchers found that increasing magnetic charge makes a black hole colder and strongly affects its observed shadow radius.
While the model shows significant changes in wave frequencies, the study also notes that real astrophysical black holes, such as M8/M87*, appear to be mostly neutral, with very low constrained magnetic charges.
Why it matters: Magnetic charges in black holes can significantly alter their observable shadows and thermal stability.
