How a small Connecticut town helped build the iconic skyline of New York City
In short: Roxbury, Connecticut, is a quiet Litchfield County town with a population of just over 2,200. Yet, beneath its surface lies a geological secret. The granite extracted from the town's historic Mine Hill quarries provided the essential building blocks for some of the most famous landmarks in the United States.
Settled around 1713 as a parish of Woodbury, Roxbury was originally known by the Mahican name Shepaug, which translates to rocky water. The town officially incorporated in October 1796, roughly a decade after the American Revolution concluded. While it remains a small community today, its industrial history is deeply tied to the minerals found within Mine Hill, a site that has been associated with local mining efforts since the middle of the 18th century.
The mining operations at Mine Hill were particularly significant due to the discovery of spathic iron, a mineral uniquely suited for steel production. This resource prompted the construction of a specialized smelting furnace. Beyond iron, the area was rich in granite, which proved to be an invaluable commodity for large-scale construction projects. The stone quarried from these hills was used to build the ore roaster and blast furnace on-site, but its utility extended far beyond the town borders.
The granite from Roxbury became a critical material for major infrastructure projects in New York City. It was utilized in the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge and Grand Central Terminal, two of the most recognizable structures in the world. Today, the town preserves its heritage through various sites, including the Roxbury Station Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. These landmarks serve as a tangible link between the quiet hills of Connecticut and the architectural grandeur of the nation's largest metropolis.
