From Amoebas to Giraffes: The Seven Universal Rules of Life

In short: What defines life? While the diversity of Earth's 5 to 10 million species is staggering, they all share a fundamental biological blueprint. From microscopic bacteria to the largest fungi on the planet, every living thing must perform seven specific processes to survive and thrive.

Biologists categorize life through seven core processes: movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, and nutrition. While these actions manifest differently across species—ranging from the high-speed sprint of a cheetah reaching 60 miles per hour to the nearly imperceptible shifts in plant life—the underlying biological necessity remains constant. Every organism, regardless of complexity, must move, sense its surroundings, and manage energy. Sensitivity allows organisms to find shelter or avoid predators. Humans possess five distinct senses for this purpose. These sensors are a fundamental survival tool.

Energy management is central to these processes. Respiration is the cellular mechanism used by all living things to release energy stored in food. This works in tandem with nutrition; while plants generate their own food through photosynthesis, other organisms must source it from external environments. Furthermore, organisms must maintain internal balance through excretion—the removal of chemical waste products produced by reactions like respiration—which is distinct from egestion, the simple passage of undigested waste. Excretion specifically targets chemical waste from internal reactions. This differs from egestion, which is the act of pooing. Every organism must clear these byproducts to stay healthy.

Growth and reproduction further define biological existence. In basic organisms, growth occurs as individual cells increase in size, whereas complex animals typically grow by adding more cells until reaching adulthood. Reproduction varies wildly in tempo: bacteria can replicate every 20 minutes through asexual means, while an African elephant requires a 22-month gestation period for sexual reproduction. Even the scale of life is vast; while many assume plants are the largest living things, a honey fungus in Oregon is estimated to span 2.4 miles across. Some plants can continue growing indefinitely after reaching maturity. In contrast, most animals stop increasing in size during adulthood.
