A legacy of revolvers meets the modern AR-15 rifle
In short: Smith & Wesson entered the long gun market by looking backward. To name their modern semi-automatic rifles, they paid homage to a revolver in continuous production since 1899. This lineage bridges over a century of engineering, moving from traditional steel frames to high-performance aluminum and polymer systems.
The M&P15 series represents Smith & Wesson's strategic expansion into a market estimated to be 80% larger than the handgun market. While the company had not manufactured a long gun in-house since fulfilling a British military contract during World War II, the M&P15 served as a primary vehicle for their re-entry. The 'M&P' designation specifically honors the .38 Military & Police revolver, a model that has seen over six million units produced since its 1899 debut.
Engineering the M&P15 involved a mix of internal production and strategic partnerships. Initially, the rifles were produced by Stag Arms and marketed under the Smith & Wesson name. Smith & Wesson now builds the lower receiver internally, but they source the barrel from Thompson/Center Arms, a firm they bought during 2007. The rifles utilize a standard direct impingement gas system, though later iterations like the M&P15 Sport and Whisper introduced short-stroke gas piston actions.
The product line demonstrates a history of iterative refinement and market testing. For instance, the company briefly attempted to capture the budget market in 2008 with the M&P15R, chambered in the 5.45x39mm Russian cartridge to leverage cheap surplus ammunition. Low commercial demand led to the discontinuation of this specific model in 2011. More recent models, such as the 2024 M&P15 Sport III, have moved toward specialized features like free-float handguards and mid-length gas systems to meet evolving consumer demands.
