Solving for the unknown by simply looking at the logic
In short: Before diving into complex algebraic rules, you can solve equations through inspection. This video demonstrates how to identify missing values by analyzing the relationship between both sides of a mathematical sentence.
Inspection is the process of looking at an equation—a mathematical sentence where two sides are equal—and determining what number makes that sentence true. For example, in the equation x + 3 = 5, inspection allows you to recognize that the missing number must be 2.
The method works for more complex structures as well. If an equation is 2x - 1 = 5, you can first determine that 2x must equal 6, and then conclude that x is 3. This approach highlights the underlying logic of algebra: finding the value that balances the scale.
