How a quiet New Jersey borough became the unlikely capital of Irish-American heritage
In short: Spring Lake, a coastal borough in Monmouth County, holds a unique demographic distinction: it boasts the highest percentage of Irish-American residents of any municipality in the United States. Beyond its cultural identity, this Gilded Age resort town has evolved from a high-society playground into a modern, affluent residential community.
Formed by the New Jersey Legislature on March 14, 1892, from land previously part of Wall Township, Spring Lake was designed as a premier coastal retreat. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it attracted the elite from Philadelphia and New York City, mirroring the development of exclusive destinations like Newport, Rhode Island. The town’s architectural legacy remains visible today in structures like the Audenried Cottage and the Martin Maloney Cottage, the latter named for the tycoon who also commissioned the St. Catharine Roman Catholic Church in 1901.
The borough’s history is punctuated by both prestige and peculiar tragedy. In 1916, it became the site of a fatal shark attack involving Charles Bruder, a Swiss hotel employee. This event was part of a broader series of attacks along the Atlantic coastline that some have linked to the inspiration for Peter Benchley's novel Jaws, though the author explicitly denied this connection. Today, the town is perhaps better known for the Spring Lake 5 Mile Run, which began in 1977 and has grown into the largest race of its distance in the country.
Modern Spring Lake maintains a distinct character, with a population of 2,789 as of the 2020 census. It operates under a weak mayor/strong council government, a structure common across New Jersey. While it has seen a decline in population from its 2000 count of 3,567, it remains a high-value area, once ranked by Forbes in 2012 among America’s most expensive ZIP codes. The borough’s geography is defined by its coastal location, with nearly a quarter of its 1.75 square miles consisting of water, including the eponymous spring-fed lake and the tidal Wreck Pond.
