The electrical spark that powers every thought you have
In short: How do neurons actually communicate? This video breaks down the action potential, the rapid electrical impulse that allows your brain to process information and trigger movement.
Neurons maintain a resting potential of -70mV, balanced by specific concentrations and permeabilities of sodium (Na), potassium (K), and chloride (Cl) ions. When neighboring cells release neurotransmitters, they create graded potentials that can be either excitatory or inhibitory.
If these signals push the neuron to a threshold of -55mV, voltage-gated sodium channels snap open. This triggers an action potential—a massive shift in electrical charge that travels along the cell to influence connected neurons.
